I took a break from coaching in 1997 to pursue my lifelong goal of becoming an international grandmaster. With the generous financial assistance of Mr. Rose, who was grateful I had led so many of his teams to prominent national titles, I was able to take on a more supervisory role with the team while I put in rigorous hours of daily study. Since achieving the title in 1999, I have been able to spread the word about chess on a national level, traveling to cities all over the United States to speak to groups of young people about the benefits of chess. The message is slowly spreading. My dream is to see chess in every school in America. It will take time, but there are signs that it’s starting to happen.
